We have been discussing the events leading up to the Civil War. One topic of major U.S. historical impact is the Monroe Doctrine. Your assignment is to state your opinion on the significance of the Monroe Doctrine with regard to U.S. History. I think the Monroe Doctrine was smart. Even though there was still issues with it if we would have expanded there would have been more problems. If new colonies would have been started the more issues we would have had and the more opinions to listen to. Also, if they came over they may not have agreed with some of the laws here and revolted and the U.S. may have lost land to them.

The United States planned to stay neutral in wars between European powers and their colonies. However, if later on these types of wars were to occur in the Americas, the United States would view such action as hostile. President James Monroe first stated the doctrine during his seventh annual State of the Union Address to Congress, a defining moment in the foreign policy of the United States. The United States secured its borders and declared the Americas off-limits to European colonization. This was because of the new sense of nationalism that the United States had after the War of 1812. The significance of the Monroe Doctrine was that of great importance, because had President Monroe not made that declaration, the Europeans might have taken over the Western Hemisphere.
ReplyDeleteThe significance of the Monroe Doctrine was so that James Monroe could secure the nation's border. Also American officials were worried about reports that France and Spain would retake the countries of Latin America. So in 1823 the Monroe Doctrine was declared that the U.S. could declare any attempt to revive old colonies as dangerous to peace and safety. I think that this was a good idea because it told other countries that we meant business and that there would be a problem if they tried to take over another colony. Therefore it probably stopped any wars or battles from starting.
ReplyDeleteThe Monroe docturine was a significant part of American history because it showed that America was ready to take military force if one of our policies was ignored. The Monroe Doctrine basically states that if any country (especially a European country) attempts to colonize the Americas, than the U.S.A woill consider that a threat to Americas saftey and will preventy that action, by force if necessary. I believe this was a very important policy, because at the time we were trying to expand our nation and if another European nation would have attempted to colonize this area than there could have been a conflict over land between us and another country. It also showed as I stated earlier that we wouldn't be intiminated by the super powers of Europe.

ReplyDeleteI think the Monroe Doctrine was a good idea. There are still things that could have been better about it but overall it was a good idea. But as I said a little better but it was a start for them but things have changed since then.

ReplyDeleteThe significance of the Monroe DOctrine in U.S. History id tremndous. The Monroe DOctrine was a vital part in establishing the United States as a independent country under no other countries rule. The Monroe Doctrine merely stated that any attempt by any European country to revive old colonies or establish new colonies on American soil would be seen as an attempt to disrupt our state of peace and safety. Now, without this statement the U.S. could have faced a problem with French or British colonial settlements that could have caused a uprising and may have eventually led to the possible disbandment of the U.S. form the inside.

Also if they did come over they may not have revolted but they may have you never know and maybe we might not have lost land but your idea with it being smart was right and i get what you are saying but we may never know what will happen.
Nice blog Schied. One question though, would the U.S. have a large enough population to support a army or some sort of defense just in case colonies or establishments were made if indeed British settlements revolted?

This Doctrine helped the U.S. keep the Latin Americas free and not allow anyone into our country to try and help the Spaniards take the land from them. This basically secured U.S borders to avoid any conflict. If the President hadn’t made this Doctrine the Spaniards might have taken over the whole western hemisphere.

Its purpose was to stop European powers from colonizing or interfering with affairs of newly independent states of the Americas. This was important in establishing the United States into a free and democratic nation. If we wouldn’t have established this, other countries would’ve been more apt to try to overtake the United States or even revive old colonies and establish new ones in the Western Hemisphere. Also, because the U.S. said that this would be considered “dangerous to our peace and safety,” I’m sure it instilled some sort of fear that if they did attempt to do this, there would be a price to pay in some form or another.

The Monroe Doctrine was a traffic stop signal for foreign nations with expansionist ideas. It was used to stop any aproch to American shores. With that statement, they stopped European colonialism and I think that’s very significant, because otherwise there were probably wouldn’t have been anymore states, which meant maybe more wars, problems and disagreements.

ReplyDeleteI think the Monroe Doctrine is an important part of American History. Many important people in history have interpereted this doctrine in many different ways and put it to several different uses, a few of which include the following:
1. The first use of the doctrine was in 1836 when Americans objected to Britain's alliance with Texas on the principle of the Monroe Doctrine. This lead James Polk to determine that the Monroe Doctrine should be strictly enforced and that the U.S. should agressively expand into the West.
2. In 1852, some politicians used the principle of the Monroe Doctrine to argue for forcefully removing the Spanish from Cuba.
3. President Grover Cleveland also used it when he threatened to take strong action against the United Kingdom in 1895 if the British would not arbitrate their dispute with Venezuela.

Peter I like when you said America was ready to take military forces because we are a country to put up a fight and fight in what we believe and when one thing fails we always have another thing to replace it.

ReplyDeleteTo Curt: Thank you for your input, Curt. That is a very good question that you asked and a very opinionated one as well. You could go both ways by saying that the population was down after the War of 1812; therefore, not having enough people to defend Europe. You could say that they did have enough people, although, because shortly after the Monroe Doctrine was declared, many Indian wars took place.
