
When the depression began, many Americans had great faith in Herbert Hoover. His skills as a businessman and as an administrator inspired confidence. Under his direction the government overtook some important measures to fight the depression. But they were not enough to end the crisis. As a result, voters in election of 1932 rejected hoover in favor of his Democratic opponent, Franklin D. Roosevelt.
