From the years 1900-1920 the progressive movement was in full swing. Progressives did not limit their reform to social ills. They also tackled the task of curbing the political power of the privileged few and removing the corrupt political machines that served them.

1. Direct primary to give voters control over candidates
2. Competitive civil service and restrictions on lobbying
3. Many states passed workmen's compensation laws
4. Election reforms to bring direct democracy to voters
a) Initiative--allowed 5% of voters to "initiate" laws in state legislatures
b) Referendum--in some states voters could then pass initiatives into laws
c) Recall--by petition voters could force an offical to stand for re-election at any time

In order to get the job they wanted people had to bribe the government to get what they wantedd. Also the high up political people were making "deals" with railroads and lumber industry to get favors.The election reforms that people fought for was direct primary which was nominating election in which voters choose the candidates who will later run in a general election. They than ratified the 17 amendment which authorized voters to elect senetors directly. They also passed things like initiative and referendum. The reforms that were enacted in the Progressive Era were reforming mayors,forming city commissions, and hiring city managers to increase government efficiency.

They first wanted to take the job of choosing canidates for the office away from machines. Next they proposed a change to the method of election the U.S senators.
