In the late 1800's the United States emerged as the world's leading industrial producer and agricultural exporter. This economic success encouraged the nation to establish overseas colonies, just as the European powers were doing. The United States hoped colonization would provide new markets for its goods and new sources of raw materials. U.S. involvement in Samoa and a short war with Spain in 1898 increased the American role in the Pacific and the Caribbean.

ReplyDeleteThe U.S.A. may have wanted the become more imperialistic because of the many countries that have many available resources such as Mexico's crops and manufacturing economy and Canada's resources which are teaming with natural gas reources. so, in conclusion the United States may have wanted to extend its reach to obtain more resources.
Imperialism is the quest for colonial empires. The United States wanted to be an imperial power because the British had colonies strung out all across the globe and we wanted part of that. We had the desire for power. The current imperialists were making alot of money by producing alot of goods, so we thought that was a good idea to try. Having more colonies would allow us to have more naval bases and steamship fueling stations. We would also have the opportunity to spread our political ways and religious ways of christianity.

Alfred Thayer Mahan of the U.S Naval College, agrued that overseas territories would make the United States more powerful and provde sites for naval bases and stamship fueling stations from which to conduct trade. Many others claimed that the U.S had a duty to spread its political system and the Christan religion to other parts of the world.

The policy,practice, or advocacy of extending the power and dominion of a nation especially by direct territorial acquisition of by gainging indiret control over the political or economical life of other areas defines imperialism. Some of the reasons that the U.S. wanted to become an industrial world power at the turn of the century for a varity of reason. The US wanted power and prestige and it was also a matter of economics. Becoming an economic power meant that our country could make much of our own products here in the US and created markets that could be exported into other countries to market these products. It all seemed to be a matter of economic growth and a stance in the global rankings. The US wanted to be able to compete with other world powers by becoming more industrialized and therefor gaining more power and wealth. This moved put the US in a seat that labled them one of the top countries to recon with in economic matters as well as military and technologically.

Industrial workers aided by efficient machines and abundant capital, produced far more goods than could be consumed at home. Industrialist turned to Africa, Asia, and Latin America for more customers and new sources of raw materials. The telegraph, steamship, and railroad made even the remotest areas potential markets for the U.S. To protect these new markets from competition industrialized countries launched a campaign of colonization. The quest for imperialism was fueled but strategic, economic and cultural motives. It was the desire for naval bases and fueling stations that led the U.S. to it. Also, many European powers were establishing over seas colonies so the U.S. decided it need to join into this new craze so it wouldn’t be weak on overseas communications if war did happen to break out.
