Immigration (Blog #15)

Spurred by industrialization, American cities grew dramatically during the second half of the century. With this growth came other changes, and a distinct urban culture developed.

Your Assignment:

1). How did immigration change in the late 1800's?
2). How did some native-born Americans respond to the new immigrants?
3). Relate the immigration issues of the late 1800's to present day in the U.S.

Due: By Sunday 12/6/09 no later than 11:59p.m.

  1. 1.) In the late 1800's many of the new immigrants were from eastern and southern Europe.
2.) Native-born Americans weren't really welcoming to the new comers, some tried to help immigrants with organizations like benevolent societies, while other tried to deny them citizenship and make requirements for coming into America, like the Chinese Exclusion Act.
3.) The immigration problem we have now is just to the south of us at the Mexican border, at least back in the 1800's European immigrants had enough dignity to go through the legal process of gaining citizenship.

  2. 1.In the late 1800s, people in many parts of the world decided to leave their homes and immigrate to the United States. Fleeing crop failure, land and job shortages, rising taxes, and famine, many came to the U. S. because it was perceived as the land of economic opportunity

    2. thay responed in anger

3.back then we did not have people coming over the borgder

  3. Many immigrants came from many differnt backgrounds and they came for many different reasons. Some came to escape persecution or poverty. Some even sought the very good economic oppurtunity. These immigrants usually found more freedom but they didn't find more economic oppurtunity. They were usually left to the dirtier jobs of society and were being paid a lot less than everybody else.

Native-born Americans responded with rage and resentment. They said that the willingness of immigrants to work cheaply robbed them of American jobs and lowered wages for all. The Natives then tried to get the law on their side. They got congres to pass the Chinese Exclusion Act to deny Chinese people the right to become a citizen. They alomost passed the Immigration Restriction League which would have been used to make literacy a requirement for admission into the country.

There are many immigration issues here today with the United States and Mexico. They continue to cross our border in search of a better life. Many Mexicans are shipped back each year back into Mexico. The Mexicans do work our dirty jobs that people don't want to do. This causes labor to become cheaper than what it should be just like it was back in the 1800's.

  4. During the 1800s, we saw alot more immigrants from the south and eastern european. Around that time we came to the Chinese Exclusion Act to stop the Chinese from becoming citizens.
The native-born immigrants did not like the new people coming to thier land. They came up with all kinds of acts to stop them from being citizens with them.
Back then immigrantion was a bigger deal because they didnt want to accept them. Nowdays we let our immigrants become citizens after a certain amount of time.

  7. immigration changed in the 1800s by passing the Chinese Exclusion Act that denied citizenship to those chinese men that were coming over and working and got payed far less. The native born americans didn't like it because even though they were born there, the acts were making it so that they couldn't be citizens either. today, immigrants are not more acceptable, but more tolerated. The southern states are filled with immigrants, some of them legal. Today, the government are trying to prevent illegal immigration, although a lot of people still think that is wrong.

  9. a big change on the immagration change was from the fact that many immigrants were from south and eastern europe, china, and Japan. The native born Chinese were not allowed legal citizenship in america.
due to the large immigration and there cheaper labor many natives were worried about how there was a possibility that most jobs were going to be taken by the immigrants.
today theres many different nations in the country. a large majority is Mexacan and they provide cheap but hard working labor. many people are having a hard time finding a job due to the fact many people can hire a mexacan for a much lower cost.

  11. 1)Alot of Immigrates were from Southern Europe and the eastern.
2)They did not like it very well and they were really angry with what was happening. They also tried to get on the good side of the law and have them be on their side.
3)Mexican's are our problem today with crossing the border to get into the U.S. They want to get better jobs to send back money to there families in mexico so they have have food and supplies.

  12. 1) Many immigrates were from southern or eastern Europe, and nourthwestern Protestants. Then came French Canadians, Armenians, Arabs, Chinese, and Japanese.

    2) They weren't for it and didn't want them to come.

    3) Back then the immigrants worked the hard jobs and didn't take over the states, and were legal. Now, many immigrants are illegal and are taking good jobs. Also, we're paying for them to be here in some ways.

  13. Most of the immigrants were Protestants that came from northwestern Europe. Native-born people thought that the immigrants willingness to work for cheap robbed the nativists of jobs and lowered wages for all. Today the illegal immigrants that come from mexico take the jobs that Americans don't want to do but they also use the health care and other benefits.

  14. 1) Immigrants came from Europe and Asia. They worked hard jobs, that other native-born americans didn't want to do. Many lived in slums and worked for very little.

    2) Native-born americans responded by creating the Chinese Exclusion act. Also they created laws that prevented illiterate immigrants from moving to the united states.

    3) they are very similar. We today have troubles with the mexicans. they are usually poor, cannot speak english, and take up alot of jobs. They do jobs that we don't want to do. This is almost the same as the late 1800's

  15. 1)The new industrial order created a new wealthy class, expanded the ranks of the middle class, and increased the demand for undustrial workers. This all happened because in the cities the new industrial order gave rise to a new social order. The urban upper class that emerged in the late 1800s was a new breed whose wealth dwarffed that of the old upper class merchants and bankers. the new rich put their money in new industries such as railroads, iron, steel, mining, or publishing. The new industrial age also created a new middle class.
2)The narive-born Americans responed to the new immigrants. They charged the willingness of immigrants to work cheaply robbed native born Americans for jobs of lower pay.In some cases nativists pushed for restrictions on immigration. Such as the chinese exclusion act.
3)Well just like back then we didn't really want immigration because now we have to learn spannish to be able to work with the mexicans but now it's not so bad even though we have to learn a new language the mexicans will take the jobs we wont take and that is good
