Conflict with Mexico (Blog #27)

Dollar diplomacy played a significant role in another Latin American Country: Mexico. Though many Mexicans uneasily referred to the United States as "the Colossus of the North," economic ties between the two countries increased in the late 19th century. But the Mexican Revolution of 1910 threatened these ties, bringing the two countries to the brink of war. (Click on the link to watch the video)

  1. Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata each had a revolutionary army that fought Victoriano Huerta.

    Henry Lane Wilson did not believe Madero could protect U.S investments in Mexico. Wilson then overstepped his diplomatic role by arranging for factions opposed to Madero to meet and discuss Madero's overthrow.

    A mexican revolutionary. He fought with Madero and after he was deposed, carranza helped defeat Huerta's forces. After the victory he became president.

  3. 1.) Pancho Villa decided to retaliate against the Americans for recognizing Carranza as president. Emiliano Zapata was a rebel leader that was helping Villa.
    2.) Ambassador Wilsion didn't believe that Madero could protect U.S. intvestigation in Mexico. President Wislon was outraged when Madero was killed.
    3.) He assumed the presidency in 1915. He was born in 1859 in the northern state of Mexico, he was over 50 years old when he took up the rebel cause. Carranza helped defeat Huerta's force.

    Emiliano Zapata was a rebel leader that Caranza communicated his plans to.
    The conflict was that Wilson overstepped his boundaries when you used force against the mexican rebels.

He refused to recognize Huerta, calling his regime a "government of butcher." Civil War raged in Mexico as revolutionary armies battled to drive Huerta out. Pres. Wilson adopted a policy of "watchful waiting."

    Venustiano Carranza held many government offices under Diaz. He was 50 years old when he took up the rebel cause. He and Diaz began to clash and he joined Madero's fight to overthrow him. He used his experience as head of a revolutionary army and his considerable political talents to gain the presidency of Mexico.

    Henry Lane Wilson did not believe that Madero could protect United States investments. Wilson wanted to overthrow Madero. Madero was eventually murdered by General Huerta. Wilson was enraged by this and was hoping that the revolutionaries would overthrow him.

    Venustiana Carranza was the man that assumed the presidency after Huerta died. Carranza was a profitable rancher that had held many government offices. Carranza also wanted to have a new constitution for Mexico, but he never got it put into place because he was overthrown and was killed.

    Venustiano Carranza de la Garza (December 29, 1859 – May 21, 1920) was one of the leaders of the Mexican Revolution. He ultimately became President of Mexico following the overthrow of the dictatorial Huerta regime in the summer of 1914 and during his administration the current constitution of Mexico was drafted. He was assassinated near the end of his term of office at the behest of a cabal of army generals resentful at his insistence that his successor be a civilian.

  13. Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata were two leaders that fought against Huerta. However, both of these leaders were not united, nor the other two leaders, so their armies were not efficient in their fighting efforts.
    The conflicts between the Wilsons was that the Ambassador wanted to send in troops to protect U.S. investments. This was not agreed upon, but he did it anyway, complicating and intensifying the Mexican and U.S. relations and negotiations.
    Venustiano Carranza took over the Mexican presidency in 1915, but three years after taking over it, he joined to fight with Madero and overthrow Diaz. He was murdered in 1920 by the forces of Alvaro Obregon, who also wanted the Presidency.
