During the first world war there were many advancements in technology. One was using cholrine gas, mustard gas, and phosgene gases were used to incapacitate, and disorient the enemy. This was succesful because there was no good defense against these except soaked rags. Air warfare also became very popular during these times. The Germans used Zeppelins, or large blimps. Some of the first war planes were invented during this time. One close combat advancement was the flame thrower. It was used to flush out soldiers in trenches and destroy gear. The effects of these were devestating. All these new technologies caused more deaths, and started a new page in the book of war.

These innovations included bolt-action infantry rifles, rifled artillery and hydraulic recoil mechanisms, zigzag trenches and machine guns, and their application had the effect of making it difficult or nearly impossible to cross defended ground. The hand grenade, already in existence —though crude—developed rapidly as an aid to attacking trenches. Probably the most important was the introduction of high explosive shells, which dramatically increased the lethality of artillery over the 19th century equivalents. Also, Chlorine gas was first used on the battlefield in April 1915 at the Second Battle of Ypres in Belgium. Later, mustard gas, phosgene and other gases were used. Britain and France soon followed suit with their own gas weapons. The first defenses against gas were makeshift, mainly rags soaked in water or urine. Later, relatively effective gas masks were developed, and these greatly reduced the effectiveness of gas as a weapon. Last, World War I was the first conflict in which submarines were a serious weapon of war. In the years shortly before the war, the relatively sophisticated propulsion system of diesel power while surfaced and battery power while submerged was introduced.

the first machine was beleived able to shoot 400-600 rounds. they were almost discarded due to a overheat problem but they created a cylinder that surrounded the barrel and was filled with a galloon of water and used to keep the barrel cool.

ReplyDeleteTrench warfare led to the development of the concrete pill box, a hardened blockhouse that could be used to deliver machine gun fire. They could be placed across a battlefield with interlocking fields of fire.
Another new weapon besides the high explosives and the posion gas was the tank was introduced. The tanks were used as a huge benefit during the war.

The machine gun, which so came to dominate and even to personify the battlefields of World War One, was a fairly primitive device when general war began in August 1914. Machine guns of all armies were largely of the heavy variety and decidedly ill-suited to portability for use by rapidly advancing infantry troops. Each weighed somewhere in the 30kg-60kg range - often without their mountings, carriages and supplies.
ReplyDeleteA carbine (i.e. short-barrelled) version of the Berthier was produced in 1916, titled the Mousqueton modele 1916. Carbines were generally preferred by all armies as being somewhat less unwieldy than longer barrelled rifles.
Indeed, the move towards carbine development was perhaps the only notable advance to rifle technology during the war, although other modifications for trench conditions were undertaken, including the fitting of periscopes and tripods.
Although it is popularly believed that the German army was the first to use gas it was in fact initially deployed by the French. In the first month of the war, August 1914, they fired tear-gas grenades (xylyl bromide) against the Germans. Nevertheless the German army was the first to give serious study to the development of chemical weapons and the first to use it on a large scale.

Here are the new technologies that were developed in WW1. Farman, Armored Tank, Junkers, Bomber, Garros, Voison, Gas, Synchronized Guns, Antiaircraft, Bolt Action Rifle, Lee Enfield, Mauser Gewehr, Mannlicher-Carcano, Lewis Gun, Vickers Machine Gun, Flame-throwers
Farman-In 1912 Henri and Maurice Farman started an aviation company in Boulogne-sur-Seine. The Farman MF-7 and MF-II were two of their planes widely used by the Allied forces at the beginning of the war. The French Army Air Service, Royal Flying Corps, Belgians, Italians, and the Royal Naval Air Service all used these popular planes.
Armored Tank-Colonel Ernest Swinton brought about the idea for an armored tank. He strongly believed that such a thing could be created. As World War 1 began, he was sent to the western front to write about the war. As he was watching battles between soldiers carrying machine guns killing thousands of infantrymen he wrote "petrol tracers on the caterpillar principal and armored with hardened steel plates" could stand against the bullets of a machine gun. Swinton proposed his idea to Sir John French and his advisers. French rejected his idea so he contacted Colonel Maurice Hankey, who took the idea to Winston Churchill, the navy minister. Churchill loved the idea, so in February 1915 he created a Landships Committee to consider the development of the armored tank. They studied and agreed with his idea as long as it followed a few guidelines. The tanks had to have a top speed of 4 mph on flat ground, be able to make sharp turns at top speed, have a reverse function, be able to climb hills, cross a 8 foot gap, and hold 10 crew, 2 machine guns, and a 2 pound gun. Lieutenant W. G. Wilson and William Tritton produced the first the first tank in complete secrecy. It was nicknamed Little Willie. It had a Daimler engine, 12 feet long track frames, weighed 14 tons, was able to carry a crew of 3, and could go just over 3 mph. Most importantly and to Swinton's disappointment, it couldn't cross many trenches. He believed that once he modified it, it would help the Allies tremendously.
Bomber-Frederick Handley Page and his company created the Hanley Page bomber in 1916. In November that year they bombed enemy installations and submarine bases. By 1918 he had created a four-engine bomber to attack industrial zones. Near the end of the war they began using huge bombs that weighed 1,650 pounds. The Royal Air Force had 258 of these powerful bombers on active service after the Armistice was signed.

Germany created "Big Bertha". It is an artillery weapon. The barrel was bigger and they also made the artillery shells better by making them thinner and filling them with tiny lead pellets.

War was really being advanced when World War 1 started. So many lives were lost in that terrible war.
ReplyDeleteProbably the most scariest advance in technology was the armies using biological warfare or otherwise known as poison gas. Chlorine gas was the first known gas used by the Germans. Even though the gas was counter balanced with the gas mask. Not all soldiers had gas masks and this often spread fear into the individual fighters.
Trench warfare was becoming a problem for the allied powers since Germany had sub-machine guns. They had to develop something that could withstand thousands of bullets. They eventually came up with the tank. The tank was very practical but since it was a new invention it had not yet been perfected so often times the tanks broke down in the middle of the battlefield.
The flamethrower was also another amazing technology that helped in the war. There were two types of flamethrowers that the Germans used. One was a one man and one was a two man flamethrower. It wasn't very effective because the flamethrower was only a short range weapon.
The technology that was introduced during World War One was divirse. The improved machine guns were on example, another was the chemical warfare. The machine guns allowed for more ammo and a faster shooting speed, allowing soldiers to kill each other faster than before. The chemical warfare allowed for one attack to kill hundreds of enemies in a large area. A third example is the tanks, which were invented to destroy heavy armored enemies and defenses, while keeping your own soldiers safe inside the tank.
ReplyDeleteMachine Gun- Machine guns needed 4-6 men to work them and had to be on a flat surface. They had the fire-power of 100 guns.
ReplyDeleteZeppelin- The Zeppelin, also known as blimp, was an airship that was used during the early part of the war in bombing raids by the Germans. They carried machine guns and bombs. However, they were abandoned because they were easy to shoot out of the sky.
Torpedoes- Torpedoes were used by submarines. The Germans used torpedoes to blow up ships carrying supplies from America to Britain.
