Reform under Taft (Blog #16)





Although a financial panic and sharp depression hit the nation in 1907, President Roosevelt remained popular. The Republican nomination was his for the asking, but having served almost two full terms, he chose not to run again. The Republicans then turned to William Howard Taft, who easily won the 1908 election. In some ways, Taft carried on Roosevelt's reform program. But as his term wore on, progressives became more and more unhappy with his actions.

    1. Set up a tax based on individual income. Extendead regulatory power of Interstate Commerce Commission to telephone and telegraph companies. Added vast areas to nation's forest reserves. Created Department of Labor to enforce labor laws. Established 8 hour work days.
    2. Some Congressional members wanted high tariffs to protect American industry. Taft signed bill, proceeding to call it the best tariff ever passed he also fired conservationist Gifford Pinchot.
    3. Woodrow wilson won with 41.9% of the vote, roosevelt with 27.4%, and Taft had 23.2% of votes.

    1-he carried out the mann-elkins act and teh 16th admendment.
    2-taft supported a tariff tax and and then was accused of betrying the progressive movement.
    3-wilson won outright.

    1) well all it did is the it suported and the congress passed the mann-elkins act and the taft administration was part of the adoption of the sixteenth amendment.

    2)after signing the payne-aldrich tariff he fired girfford and something about the new nationalism

    3) the split of the rebublicans and the supporters to make sure woodrow will win the 1912 election
