WWII, the Home Front (Blog #28)

Although World War II was fought on the battlefields of Europe, Asia, and North Africa, American farms and factories also helped win the war. As the United States mobilized its resources for combat, the entertainment industry helped sustain morale. For Japanese Americans the war resulted in confinement in remote camps. For African Americans, Mexican Americans, and women, the conflict brought both new opportunities and reminders that discrimination and inequality still existed in American society. (p. 407, 16.2)

  9. 1) America switched from a peacetime economy to a wartime economy. Everything went to the war effort: food, rubber, metal, etc. Things like gas and food were rationed so that they could be sent over seas to the troops to keep them supplied. Propaganda rallied support for the war. Government took over companies that were vital to the war effort. Women served as nurses or took on factory jobs at home to produce things such as ammunition and tanks to be sent to the troops.

    2) Japanese Americans had long been racially discriminized against before the war. After Pearl Harbor people became very suspiscious and fearful of Japanese Americans, thinking that they must be spies or something along those lines. Because of this, many Japanese Americans were relocated and many of their lives shattered because of it.

    3) Both races found job opportunities during the war working in power plants and manufacturing ammunition and tanks and ships for the war effort. Some went into the armed forces.

  10. After Pearly Harbor the U.S. went into a complete mobilization for war. Car factories made war vehicles, farmers increased production to aid the war, factories made war goods, and scientists worked on new inventions to help win the war. Every citizen stepped up to do his/her part in the war effort. People had to ration food, fuel, and scarce products needed for the war. Also many jobs were created during the war, the economy boomed, people bought war bonds, and more.

When war in pacific started many Americans turned on the Japanese Americans. People became upset with them and wanted something done. Thousands of Japanese Americans were sent to camps. These camps were surrounded by fences and guard towers. The Japanese people were treated as prisoners for no reason other than the fact that they were from Japan.

The war brought many gain to people of different race. Many African Americans and Mexicans were able to serve in the war and fight for the country. Also with the need for jobs in the home front many people of racial decent got to work and help out for the war effort.
