During the Reconstruction, the black population had difficulty integrating into southern society. They were still treated poorly and had hardly the equality they deserved.
1.) The Reconstruction was the recreation of the southern states after the Civil War. Much of the societal problems had to do with the freed slaves being integrated into society. Most Southerners were against the idea of freeing the slaves in the first place, so the freed men were treated poorly.
in 1865, the united states president Abraham Lincoln came up with a plan to reconstruct the south. This plan would make Southerners take an oath supporting the United States, rather than confederacy. the southern states rejoining the Union could no longer allow slavery because the Civil War was over, and their punishment for trying to split the country in two was that they had to free all slaves. the southerners would be allowed to form new state governments as long as 10% of the state's voters supported the Union. This meant 10% of a state's voting population needed to take the oath. most notherners were still mad and hateful of the south and wanted higher voting requirements. they didn't want southern states to be just 10% loyal.
Reconstruction was the phase where the slaves started over. They started their own churches and joined others. Some black schools were established. Congress developed the Freedmen's Bureau on March 3, 1865. Over 200,000 blacks learned to read through the progams offered. The program eventually expired in 1872. Sixteen Black men served in the Senate and the House of Representatives between 1868 and 1876, and numerous others took on roles in state and local government. The whites who allied themselves with blacks became known as either “scalawags” or “carpetbaggers.” Scalawags were Southerners who supported Reconstruction and were accused of harming the South by helping the blacks and stealing from their state treasuries. Some were entirely above board, while others served the Republican governments to avail themselves of money-making opportunities.
One is that within the context of the Constitutionally delegated powers, State powers decreased and federal powers increase as a result of war. *The concept of a sovereign State (as defined in the 1883 Treaty of Peace) ended and with it the power of a State to secede.
After the war, there was a great loss in slaves. Howard started a group project that taught lots of blacks how to read. Many men were staying on ground they stole from their slaves. President Lincoln stood firmly behind the Freedmens Bereau. The Freemens Bereau says that people must come and take charge of more than 4 million slaves. Blacks gained education and unity. Blacks started entering politics. The same bad stuff was happening after the war as it was before the war.
Reconstruction is like starting over or rebuilding! The south had to basically start all the way over. The north didn't have as much physical damage but they had to rebuild their relationship with the south.
1)As important as the war itself was the tangled problem of how to reconstruct the defeated South. Encouraged by the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the Constitution, African Americans at last nourished hopes for full equality. Their hopes were to be dashed. By 1877 Southern white resistance and the withdrawal of federal supervision brought about the "redemption" of the South and African Americans were disenfranchised. The redemption measures enforced greater racial separation and increased white intimidation and violence.
1)The Reconstruction was the process of fixing the land after the civil war. The South made black codes, for slavery to help fix their land. The North outraged about this.
the freed men where helped out by the government but most of the land that was given was stolen by other men. the north was helping the slaves by teaching them how to read the south still considered the blacks lower than the white. when Lincoln died the aid towards the black had ended they were getting treated badly
The reconstruction was to rebuild the South after the civil war. The South got a lot of society problems with the freed slaves who being integrated in the South.
Reconstruction went on to try to reunite the states that had either rebelled or separated from the rest of the U.S. completely. Because of Reconstruction, the northern states were hit hard with economic issues. The south was not happy with the idea of freeing the slaves, so they continued to treat them badly, even after they had been set free. The southern people also grew angry and many people were killed as a result. (Ex. Ku Klux Klan)
Reconstruction is the rebuilding of the areas destroyed during the war. It also went to reuniting the states that rebelled. The south had many freed slaves that needed jobs, all the railroads and plantations had been destroyed. There was a lot of work to do.
the reconstruction after the civil war was to reunite the south with the north. After the war the south had very little workers and also had to rebuild their cities and job force.
