Lasting Legacy of Civil War (Blog #4)

As we wrap up discussing the Civil War, one needs only to look at our current age to fully understand how our society has come full circle. The fact is there are still flaws stemming from the Civil War.

Your Assignment:

1). Watch the following video. The Effects of the War on the South

2). Discuss ramification the Civil War had on later events in American History citing specific examples and the correlation between the two.

*You may have to do a little research on events that happened after the Civil War. (Ex. Civil rights movement, etc.)

Due: By Sunday no later than 11:59pm

  1. It is estimated that Southern planters had lost over $2 million in human chattel when their slaves were emancipated. Any crops that might be salvaged lay idle because planters had lost their labor source. Southerners who had once lived the high life were now poverty-stricken, struggling to get by. It would be ten years before the South’s agricultural output would return to pre-Civil War numbers, and even then the most productive region would be the burgeoning southwest.

  2. I think one event that the civil war really had an impact on or a relationship with was the great depression. The 1930's was a period of great difficulty for America. The civil war had not helped with the events leading up to the great depression either.

  3. The war destroyed the south's economy and most of the south and the north and cities that were burned to the ground. Farmers could no longer buy needs for their farms. The south's money was no longer any good too. Also the livestock was either killed or lost.

  4. 2.)the outcome of the election would ultimately be decided by swiftly changing political tides. The majority of Republicans backed the current president, Abraham Lincoln; but Lincoln had a significant number of detractors even within his own party. However, his Republican supporters had a plan. Dissention within the Democratic Party, due in part to the recent death of their leader, Stephen A. Douglas, divided the northern Democrats into three factions: War Democrats, Peace Democrats, and Copperheads.

  5. Entire crops had been burned by Northern soldiers, and those that had escaped intentional destruction had fallen into an unproductive disarray of weeds. Livestock was killed or left to fend for themselves. Banks and businesses were shut down. Wealthy Southerners were now poverty stricken.

  6. Some of the effects the Civil War had were that the south was completely destroyed. It took ten years for the south to rebuild. There were social tensions between blacks and whites in the south. Business in the south couldn't buy materials because all of the banks were closed. It was just a huge mess.

  7. 1) Some of the effects after the war was that the south laid in ruins. It took the south ten long years to get up and running in full speed again. The south had nothing after the war, the banks were closed so they couldn't buy seed to plant. Another thing the south plantations lost was most or all of there livestock. So as you can tell the civil war effected numerous things after the war.

  8. Industrialism began as a result of the increase of wartime and the development of new items. Also, reconstruction was going on so it was very hard to reconstruct, industrialize, and fight segregation at the same time.

  11. The civil war affected the way that the African Americans were treated until after the civil rights movement. It effected the blacks being able to vote because they needed certain tests before they could vote.

  12. Directly after the Civil War, a period known as the Reconstruction took effect. During the Reconstruction, the southern cities were rebuilt with the abolishment of slavery in mind. Southern states were now given industrialized factories and African Americans were given some form of payment in exchange for caring for the crops they were once forced to work.

The Civil Rights Movement during the 1900s was largely due to the unjust treatment of African Americans after the Civil War. After Reconstruction was no longer enforced in the South, African Americans were harshly discriminated against. After nearly a century, the Movement paved the way for a fairer society.

  13. Ramifications of the civil war were the physical destruction in the south. Cities had been burned to the ground including businesses and homes. crops and livestock were also suffering, it would be 10 years before the agriculture would be the same pre civil war.

  14. Cotton fields were badly scarred, and live stock suffered a similar fate. Southerners who returned to what was left of their homes not only had to endure this overwhelming physical destruction, but also the economic effects of the war.

  15. After the war, the tension grew between the whites and blacks. The discrimination of blacks caused many events. Blacks wanted to be treated like whites and fought for equality.

One event is over the spring and summer, student volunteers begin taking bus trips through the South to test out new laws that prohibit segregation in interstate travel facilities, which includes bus and railway stations. Several of the groups of "freedom riders," as they are called, are attacked by angry mobs along the way.

The second event is President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1968, prohibiting discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of housing (April 11).

  16. After the war, blacks started the Civil Rights Movement. They went on marches and fought against inequality amongst their race and the whites. Many more people were killed and imprisoned during the Movement, but they had a great impact on the future generations.

  17. 2) The south was completely destroyed. They needed to fix it. One of the problems included that blacks and whites did not get along. There were many conflicts between the two nationalities. The blacks were treated with no respect, and they didn't get any say on anything that happened.
