Economic Stimulus Theories (Blog #13)

Theodore Roosevelts "square deal" promised to give every laborer and farmer a square deal, no more, no less. T.R.'s theory, with regard to helping the economy, dealt with protecting the consumer through reforms and trustbusting. After T.R.'s Presidency, Taft continued on with this theory of protecting the consumer through progressive reforms. Later on in the 1930's Franklin D. Roosevelt institutes an economic stimulus plan his administration calls the "New Deal". This plan calls for tax money to be spent on infrastructure similar to that of President Obama's plan during his first two years in office.

**Square Deal, TR**

**New Deal, FDR**

Your Assignment:

1.) Discuss the way President Obama and his plan have attempted to stimulate the economy. (Research)
2.) Discuss the other side of the aisle (Repbulicans) and their theory of the best way to stimulate the economy. (Again, research will be necessary)
3.) Which of these do you believe would better suit stimulating the economy.
4.) Comment on 2 of your classmates posts

  1. 1.) Obama's plan to attempt to stimulate the economy was to pass the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. This was to help create jobs almost immediately and to provide relief for those most impacted by the recession.
2.) The Republicans tried to lower health care costs, simplifying the tax code, and controlling spending.
3.) I would side with the Republicans on lowering the health care costs and what not because our country has a very low poverty rate so many people cannot afford the health care needed for their families and themselves.

    1. I agree with you on part 3. Obama is not doing much to help our debt which is one major thing we need to focus on.

    3. Yes, Obama certainly is doing nothing to benefit our country. Our debt has skyrocketed since he's been in office.

    4. Obama needs to step down from office. He isn't doing anything for us.

  3. 1) Barack Obama’s economic plan will inject $75 billion of stimulus into the economy by getting money in the form of tax cuts and direct spending directly to the people who need it most. Obama’s proposal will immediately provide stimulus using means that do not require lengthy governmental or administrative delays. The plan also reserves an additional $45 billion of stimulus that can be injected into the economy quickly in the future if the economy continues to deteriorate.
    2) The Republicans would like to lower health care costs, lower taxes, and control spending.
    3) I would side with the Republicans due to the fact that they would help the Americans in poverty afford more. They might be able to get some of the benefits that middle class American could afford.

    2) Only the people can stimulate the economy. At best, all the government can do is get out of the way, which Democrats seem heck bent on not doing at present. Republicans are trying to lower taxes, create jobs, and so much more.
    3) I agree with the Republicans. There are way more things we could be worrying about right now, then Obamacare and all that other stuff. We need to focus on the economy and how we can make it better for the people living in it.

    2. I agree, Obama doesn't need to be focusing on Obamacare when there are more important things at hand.

  5. 1.) Last week on June 14, President Obama announced his economic plan to finally bring economic recovery and growth to the U.S. in a much ballyhooed address in Cleveland. He threw down the gauntlet to Mitt Romney on the issue, saying “more than anything else, this election presents a choice between two fundamentally different visions of how to create strong sustained growth; how to pay down our long term debt; and most of all, how to generate good, middle-class jobs….”
2.) Republicans don’t believe in stimulating economies. They think markets eventually clear — once the pain is sufficient. Or in the immortal words of Herbert Hoover’s treasury secretary, millionaire industrialist Andrew Mellon: “Liquidate labor, liquidate stocks, liquidate the farmer, liquidate real estate. It will purge the rottenness out of the system. People will work harder, lead a more moral life.”
3.) I agree with the Republican because they are trying to lower cost and lower taxes, and democrats are trying to do the total opposite and that will just hurt the government.

  11. 1) Obama is wanting to create jobs and provide relief for people. this will hopefully make it easier and better for Americas economy.
    2) Republicans want to lower the spending costs or at least be able to control it. They also want to lower the health care cost so that it is more affordable for the below average person.
    3) I can defeintely see both of these ideas working. I do believe that it would be easier to just go the republicans way though.

  12. 1) President Obama has attempted to stimulate the economy in many ways such as to make an effort to give the consumers more opportunity to buy goods and services from those people who make their living by providing those goods and services, giving them more reason to employ more people in order to accommodate the increase in business.

    2) The republicans theory on the best way to stimulate the economy is to lower government spending and they believe that Government should help stimulate a business environment where people are free to use their talents.

    3) I think the Republicans would be a better suit for stimulating the economy because they have better points and know what their doing.

  13. 1.) Obama's plan is to get money through tax cuts and direct spending directly to those who need it most. This includes $75 million with $45 billion for later, if need be. He also plans to:,
    * Provide an immediate $250 tax cut for workers and their families.
Provide an immediate, temporary $250 bonus to seniors in their Social Security
    checks.
Provide an additional $250 tax cut to workers and an additional $250 to seniors if
    the economy continues to worsen
Provide relief to homeowners hit by the housing crisis.
Provide aid to states hardest-hit by the housing crisis to avoid a slash in services.
     Extend and expand Unemployment Insurance.

2.) Republicans simply want to create jobs! They also want to lower taxes.

3.) Creating jobs and lowering taxes is amazing, but Obama seems to have more in mind....although, how much of his plan has been put in place or has been effective?!.....ZIP!! :P

    2. I think the republicans idea is just too good to be true, how can you create jobs that pay and lower taxes? How do you plan on paying the workers and have enough money from lower taxes?

  15. 1) Obama's plan to stimulate the economy was by making a budget plan and by cutting or eliminating some 200 federal programs, many dedicated to social services and education, while increasing military spending and funding for the construction of nuclear power plants. Announcing his $3.7 trillion proposal, Obama touted his previously stated pledge to freeze funding for domestic programs outside of the military for five years.
2)Republicans don’t believe in stimulating economies. They think markets eventually clear once the pain is sufficient. They also try to control government spending and help lower health care costs.
    3) I would side with the republican side and try to cut some programs but also see if the markets eventually clear.

  17. 1. Obama plans to press Congress for billions of dollars in fresh spending to reduce unemployment as he also pursues a compromise on long-term deficit cuts.

    2. House, Republican opposition to massive spending increases is stiffening despite pledges on both sides to work together. Republicans want to cooperate with the new administration to help reset the faltering economy, but that many facets of the program being pushed by majority Democrats would fail to create new jobs.

    3. I honestly think neither plan will work, either way you go there will be problems and they will never get a good outcome.
