The Great Depression of the 1930's was not the first depression in American history, but it was by far the worst. It lasted for most of the decade, and during that time millions of Americans lost their jobs and sank into poverty. In cities and in rural areas, many people suffered from hunger, homelessness, and despair. Life was not all bleak during the depression, though. Movies, radio, and popular fiction helped lift American spirits.

For those still working, the discontent released by economic collapse during the 1930s were expressed in struggles within the factory system, which we will turn to in the next chapter. But the men and women for whom life had changed most drastically and immediately were no longer in the factories.

Rural - Farmers found themselves with more food than they could sell. Many farmers had to just leave their crops to rot. They also did not have enough food to feed the cattle, so many of them were slaughtered. Mortgage was also a huge problem. Etc, etc.

The great depression affected urban life by dropping the prices of grain and other livestock. The urban people were basically starving because there was no food or money to buy food. There were also no jobs to get money to buy food.

1) Businesses began laying off their employees in 1929, bring the number of unemployed Americans to 12 billion Americans without jobs. This caused most americans to fall into poverty.

On the farm, demand prices plummeted and farmers found themselves with more goods than they could sell. Many farmers were unable to keep up their mortgage payments.
