This is exactly what happened, the mexicans came over and shed American blood onto American soil. The fighting that took place was fierce and very costly. The most renown fight was that of the Alamo where a standoff took place for 13 straight days. Many of the Mexican army which was led by Santa Anna were killed. Eventually the Alamo was taken over. Not long after Sam Houston led a army which overtook Santa Anna who was captured and taken prisoner.
ReplyDeleteOverall, the outcome was different. Mexico gave Texas its independence and established borders. So, The U.S. got more land and Mexico added on a defeat.
One cause of the Mexican War is the fact that in 1835 about 25,000 Americans, including slaves, lived in Texas illegally. This lead to General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna seized control of the Mexican government in 1834 and tightened the control over Texas, which outraged American settlers. This all lead to a full scale rebellion called the Texas Revolution. The Mexicans overall paid a heavy price for their victory. The Texas army later surprised Santa Anna bear the San Jacinto river shou8ting, “Remember the Alamo!” and killed about 630 Mexicans in 20 minutes. The Mexican war occured because with America's econemy and population sky-rocketing the need to expand became a large concern for the American government. Thus the American people began settling various places one of which was a large area known as Texas. The Mexican war occured in 1847 but the U.S had declared Texas an independant republic ten years earlier. THe only problem was that the Mexican government also beleived Texas was their property. Tensins rose and war broke out. The American offense was a three pronged attack that pushed deeper and deeper into the heart of Mexico. As the American army won more and more battles a daring plan was proposed by general Winfeild Scott to sieze the capital of Mexico. On September 14th 1847 Scotts army of 12,000 men marched into Mexico's capital after havin fought and won key battles throughout the Mexican mainland. After minimal resistance was put in the capital the treaty of Guadeloupe was signed ending the Mexican War.

The Mexican war, which took place in 1846-1848, was mainly performed by the president of the U.S. James K. Polk who called for Texas annexation immediately after his won presidential selection. Just 1836 Texas got an independent republic (they used to be a part of Mexico) and Mexico warned the U.S. that if they consider annexation of Texas that would be the declaration of war against them. So Mexico broke diplomatic relations with the U.S. and the Mexican war started. In fact it was just a war to gain new land with a good ending for the U.S.: They got Texas, California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and parts of Arizona. And Mexico got 15 Mio. $ compensation.
ReplyDeleteWhen Mexico declined to negotiate with the settlements, the U.S. decided to take by force what they couldn't achieve by diplomacy. The war was heavily supported by the outright imperialists and by those who wished slave-holding territory extended. Approximately 20 different battles took place between the start of the war in May of 1846 to the end of the war in February of 1848. The fighting of the war actually ended when U.S. General Winfield Scott occupied Mexico City on September 14, 1847, but it was a few months after that the actual peace treaty was signed. On February 2, 1848 the Treat of Guadalupe Hidalgo was dictated by the U.S. This marked the official end of the Mexican War; Mexico gave up all their claims to Texas and surrendered the Mexican Cession. About 80,000 Spanish people became U.S. citizens because of the treaty. Overall, the outcome of the war led to a vast expansion of the United States' territory to the southwest.
