Your Assignment:

During the first half of the 19th century, a major reform movement took place. Many different people, and groups, worked to change areas of society for the better. The question is, how did these reformers work to 1. improve the lives of poor Americans, 2. slaves, 3. and women?

  1. 1) Since the economy was growing with the additions of a transportation system and a new market economy, new social classes rose. The well to do factory owners and such were on top while the poor were at bottom. Most poor were those of which worked in the factories and crammed themselves in shacks. But another class arose, the middle class. These were people who benefited from both sides of social classes. Though they too had to face problems, this class consisted of artisans, farmers, and many others who could profit from the market economy.

    2) Now, rerforms isn't really the word for ending slavery. See, Southern plantation owners needed people to work in the fields, then they needed more people to work so that they could make more profit faster. Thus Slavery was formed and used. Again, reforms were really never made but the slaves themselves resisted through escapes, breaking of equipment, and many other .... stall tactics to make sure the plantation didn't run smoothly. Although punishment was harsh, many slaves partook in the events.

    3) Conditions for women grew worse because they were still seen as non-providers for their families. Since this was still a view that many shared, women in factories or any other work places got very low pay and sometimes long work hours. Coupled along with children, women workers were under harsh working conditions as well. But that all changed for women and men alike when unions were formed and strikes took place to prevent low pay, and bad working hours.

  4. Well first of all to help improve the lives of poor Americans there was a huge need for employers for new factories which were growing. Along with helping the poor it also helped women by offering jobs to single women. These women were cheaper to hire than men because they did not have a family to support.
To help slaves we wrote the American Anti-Slavery Society. This came about in 1833. It was the first national anti-slavery organization devoted to abolition.
The first U.S. women’s rights convention was held in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848. More than 300 women and men attended what was Seneca Falls Convention, which marked the birth of the organized women’s rights movement in the United States. Soon after the Declaration of Sentiments called for reforms to strengthen women’s legal rights.

  7. During the first half of the 19th century, major reform movements took place. People and different groups worked to change areas of society for ther better.
Reforms helped to improve the lives of poor Americans such as the new poorhouses that were set up to teach working skills and disipline to help poor people become self-supporting.
Another reform was for the slaves. One of the first steps to eliminate slavery was in 1833 when abolitionists formed the first American Anti-Slavery Organizating was set up. It quickly spread to 200 branches in the North and Middle West. Many of these people protested to the legislature and it sparked peoples attention that slavery could possibly be wrong, which led to many other supporters to join this cause.
The thrid reform was for women. Women didn't have many rights, especially African American ones. This led women to start to speak out about these limitations. When 2 American abolitionists, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott were refused the right to speak at the World's Anti-Slavery Convetion, and so they decided to do something about it. This led to the first U.S. women's rights convention. It was know as the Seneca Falls Convention which marked the beginning of a movement for equal women's rights.
Those were three big reform movements that took place in the 19th century.

  8. In the 1900's there were many reforms and some of the reforms to help the poor people were the opening of factories. This meant that middle or low class citizens could work and earn money. Also, people were learning to make more stuff at home and the market revolution had made it cheaper for farm machinery.
The reforms made womens lives easier by equal right. Also, suffrage or the right to vote and this put women at equal with the men.
And last but not least slaves. They were helped by the first formed American Anti-Slavery Society. This started a petition to get slavery abolished.
These were all some ways that reformers and different groups working together helped out and shaped America's society.

  9. For the poor americans, instead of a whole family working, many factories needed more employees. So they found it more practical to hire individuals instead of families. But when something went wrong the people didn't like they went on strike. More then 60 unions were organized to fight for reformes. For slaves to be free there were some people who wanted to help them out and they created the underground railroad. This would help lead the blacks to the North or to Canada to escape slavery. The American Anti-Slavery Society help alot to end it all. For women to have some-what of equal rights to men there was a womens rights movement. Elizabeth Stanton and Luctetia Mott in 1840 launched a movement to end discrimanation aginst women. More than 300 women and men attended the Seneca Falls Convention witch marked the birth of organized Women's Rights movement.

  11. 1) The reform movements helped improve the lives of poor Americans by economic growth and development. This is due to the fact that more jobs were made available in places such as factories.
    2) The reform movements also helped improve the slave problems. The American Anti-Slavery Society (1833-1870) founded by William Lloyd Garrison and Arthur Tappan, helped fight for the rights of African-Americans in America.
    3) Lastly, the reform movements helped push for women's suffrage. Woman were eventually granted the right to vote with the passing of the 19th Amendment on August 26, 1920.

  12. The way the reforms worked to improve the lives of poor Americans was putting people in utopias to experiment with new ways of organizing family life, work, and property ownership. This was in attempt for the poor to create there idea society. People such as middle class women began to take the lead in many reform efforts. Other ways the poor got helped was poorhouses taught work skills and discipline to help the poor became self-supporting. Education for the poor was also put together by reforms.
The reforms helped the slaves by allowing African-Americans to fight for there freedom. This started the Anti-Slavery Society to immediate abolition. Since reforms inspired people to improve society the slaves saw it was a good time for them to have improve there way of living also.
Reforms helped women by giving them woman’s rights. Since the discussion for the rights for slaves got brought up women saw this as the opportunity also. In 1848 a convention called the Seneca Falls Convention was held. This marked the birth of woman’s rights. At the convention they adopted a Declaration of Sentiments. This declaration called for reforms to strengthen woman’s legal positions. Most importantly it called for woman’s suffrage or the right for women to vote.

  13. In the first part of the 19th century some Americans were inspired to improve the life of poor people by finding poorhouses and teach them how to become self-supporting and how to temperance themselves in concerning alcohol. And they built public schools (for everybody). Also there was big movement against slavery and abolitionists began to forces to call for an immediate end to slavery. That started people thinking of more general rights and so a couple of people started a movement for women’s rights in the U.S. and soon they adapted a Declaration of Sentiments.

  14. Reformers worked to improve the lives of poor Americans by building factories that these people could work in. Also since there were major advancements in farm machinery more people started making their own products and selling them too. The reforms helped slaves in the ways that there were petitions going around on whether slavery should be allowed or not. Lastly, the reforms helped the woman because they were now given the right to vote and were slowly becoming more equal to men.

  15. In the 19th century our economy was rising and unfortunately several groups of people did not benefit much from this. One of those groups were slaves. Slaves were the driving force behind the south's agricultural profit. With the help of societies like the American anti-slavery society and abolitionists the civil war was fought and all slaves were freed. Another groups with few rights were women. They had organizations such as the suffragettes led by womens leaders. They were able to obtain voting rights or suffrage for women.
