New technologies in the civil war were a huge part of th4e war. I will now list some major technological advancements used in the war. a new type of rifle was introduced along with the mini ball which made these rifles more accurate and cut the time it took to load them in half. Another was the introduction of a revolver as a side arm, although not as many revolvers were used as muskets and rifles it was not uncommon to see a general or higher ranking officer wielding a revolver. During the civil war the revolver of choice was any model made by colt. Next was the introduction of the first machine gun. This new invention known as the gatling gun, this gun was capable of firing 1,000 rounds a minute. Another technology although not a weapon was that trains were used to ferry soldiers and supplies all over the country, this greatly helped with transportation and speed. The north had a huge advantage over the south in this aspect becasue they had many more miles of track laid down. There are to many new technologies used in the civil war to discuss but these are four of the most used in the civil war.
ReplyDeleteSome of the new technology inthe civel war is guns they introduced rifling in the common musket was the result of the French invention of the Minie Ball bullet and the rifled musket to shoot it. The rifling tripled the effective range of the common soldier, and the new bullet's hollow base carried enough of the gunpowder fouling to enable rapid and sustained repeated reloading in battle. The infantry rifle was still a long musket, and it still loaded from the muzzle, but in massed fire, it wrought havoc against formations of troops. The revolving pistol, invented by Colt, the breechloaders of Sharps, Spencer, and others, and rifled cannon, as deadly as they were, didn't change warfare nearly as much as the Minie Ball and the rifled musket that shot it. The Civil War also saw the invention and use of the submarine, the flame thrower, land mines, grenades, observation balloons, iron hulled warships, and repeating guns. So much was invented to allow large massed armies to maneuver for extended periods of time in the field, that the American Civil War became the text book model for large massed armies in the military academies of Europe, and stayed that way for a long time.The common soldier of the American Civil War invented trench warfare as a reaction to the rifled musket.
ReplyDeleteThere was much new technology before the Civil War started and during the Civil War. The muzzle loading 58 caliber rifled musket. It was the pimary weapon.There were over a million and a half made during the Civil War. The 58 rifel musket made a dramatic impact on the Civil War. Another gun was the Colt revolver Model 1849 31 caliber.325,000 were marked made in New York or Hartford between 1850 and 1873. And another 11,000 marked as made in London, England. They found these guns were to low powered for serious military defensive use. The 31 caliber didnt really have an effect on the Civil War because it was rarley used. The Colt model 1851 Navy Revolver was another gun among the many. This was one of the most popular revolvers used in the civil war.An estiment of 250,000 were made between 1850 and 1873. This gun was more lethal than the the 31 caliber.
ReplyDeleteDuring the Civil war they made new tecnological breaks in making new types of weapons. There were the smoothbore muskets, the gatling gun, the ketchum grenades (these grenades have a tail so that when the top of the grenade hits its target it explodes), sharps rifle, tarpley carbine, burnside carbine, colt walker snd dragoons, henry rifle. There were also attempts at making repeating cannons and there are over 60 kinds of carbines that were made during the civil war.
ReplyDeleteThree new technologies were aerial reconnaissance,ironclad ships, the first aircraft carrier. Aerial reconnaissance had an impact on the war because the hydrogen balloons, when they were in use, forced Confederates to hide their forces for fear that they may be gunned down without actually seeing their attacker. Another technology was the first aircraft carrier. It was a rebuilt coal barge used to for air crafts such as the hydrogen balloons. Also ironclad ships were a new technology that made an impact on the civil war because they played a huge role in naval war as a unarmored warships and both the Union and the Confederation created many of them.
ReplyDeleteThere were many new weapons that were introduced into the civil war. This led to many casualties. Some of these weapons were the Colt Revovler and the Remington Revolver these two were very much liked my soldiers. The remington was more liked because it had a quick cylinder release which made reloading faster.
ReplyDeleteAnother was the musket, this weapon was used by both the south and the north and it was effective because not only could you shoot your opponent you could stab them with the end of the weapon also.
Another weapon not many people know about was the northern used Ketchum Grenades.They used 6 pound balls with a paper fuse and a long hole to ensure the grenade would hit the target.
And last but not least the gattling gun which was a multi-barrelled, .58 calibre repeating machine gun that was capable of firing off 1000 rounds per minute.This was effective because it could shoot off multiple bullets without over heating.
So that is some of the weapons and how there were effectively used in the American Civil War.
The Civil started during what was known as the Industrial Revolution. This lead what was known as Industrial warfare. This meant that there were new weapons and ways of war that were coming about. New guns were brought about such as a breech-loading weapon, also known as a firearm. In this gun the shell or bullet is loaded at the end on the gun not the front like a muzzle loader. Another gun was the repeating rifle. This is where a single barreled rifle can contain multiple rounds on ammunition. To reload the rifle you must recock it during the firing action. Also, many forms of transportation were new and communications were becoming wireless.

ReplyDeleteSome examples of these included bolt-action infantry rifles, rifled artillery, and hydraulic recoil mechanisms, zigzag trenches and machine guns. Their application made it difficult and almost nearly impossible to cross ground defended by these weapons.
Another example was the use of poison gas mainly by the Germans. They used this in hopes that it would be used to breakdown the deadly use of trench warfare. Chlorine gas was the first used on the battlefield in April 1915 and later mustard gas and phosgene were used. It was reported that the gas tactic resulted in over 1,000,000 deaths but really didn’t have that much of an effect on the course of the war.
One other advancement was in the Air warfare. Earlier air spotters were unarmed so a key invention was the interrupter gear, which was a German invention that allowed a machine gun to be put behind the propeller so the pilot could fire straight ahead in their flight path.
Those are just some of the technological advances that occurred during the Civil War.
First of all, numbers was the primary weapon of all in the Civil War. The North had up to 22 million people which would end up beating the South's meek 9 million. 4 million of which were slaves. Another weapon was industrialism. The North has 85% of the U.S.'s total manufacturing abilities. The South was still agricultural.
ReplyDeleteNow, to actual guns and weaponry. There was a rise in artillery use such as cannons. Cannon fire was great artillery at limited ranges.
Another great rise in weaponry was sidearms. These consisted of cut off shotguns, six shooters and pistols. Another was shoulder worn rifles loaded with hollow point bullets which caused widespread deaths.
Newly introduced technologies during the civil war was in the form of weapons. These weapons enhanced accuracy, power, and range. One excellent example of one of these weapons is the rifled musket. This was the primary infantry weapon. The rifled musket of the Civil war was killing and injuring twice to three times as many men in a single volley than the musket of the Napoleonic era.
ReplyDeleteIn the water, the submarine was a big deal. The H.L. Hunley was a major success. It was the first sub to successfully attack an enemy vessel. The ironclad, not totally new since the European navies had previously used them, proved the downfall of the age of the wooden warship during the ACW. Turrets were also brought around during this time period.
2 other technologies introduced around this time that changed the conduct of the war include the electric telegraph and the railroad. Also, in the air observation balloons were used to get an idea of enemy troop movements.
Also there were new technologies in medicine, which meant bettere survival rates among the troops, obviously having a large impact on the outcome of the Civil War.
As the war began, old-fasioned weapons were used. Such as, swords, guns and knives. By the end of the war things like cannons, hand grenades, amored ships and torpedos, were being used. In terms of guns, they transferred from muzzle loaders to breach loaders. The most obvious impact it had on the war, was that it was way bloodier than the other wars. ReplyDeleteDuring the Civil War 1861-1865 died many people. Sure, that’s normal for a war, but there was something special about this war. It was a “border war”, it was the border between old weapons and new ones. Because of the invention of the first guns in history, there were much more people, which died! The best tactics have been powerless, against these new revolvers!
ReplyDeleteNew technology and weapons were introduced in the Civil War time period. Some of these include: hand held weapons like colt revolvers and a LeMat revovler. Also used were rifles, carbines, muskets, granades. and galting guns. These new technologies and new weapons impacted the war in many ways. But some of the ways were: more people died because these weapons made it easier and quicker to fire so more people died. Also, it made the Union have quicker fire back. Which was very helpful. Also, it gave them bigger and faster fire power which gave them quicker reaction time. And also with the new weapons the enemy could be farther away because the weapons could fire farther away.
ReplyDeleteThe Civil War brought in many new weapons during the bloody battle. Some of these weapons were introduces during the war and others were available before the war but hadn’t been put in to use yet. It was considered the to be the first modern war. Things like railroad trains, aerial observation, telegraph, photography, torpedoes, mines, ironclad ships, and rifles all came about. The incredible advances in manufacturing capabilities that had occurred up to the time of the Civil War made the widespread manufacturing of rifled cannon possible and there were several models of rifled cannon used during the American Civil War. .Experimenting with machine guns also was used in the Civil War. Know were actually considered a machine gun but it had almost the same concept and that is how our modern day machine gun came about. Another important invention that became operational during the Civil War was the Gatling gun. It was one of the first rapid-fire guns and a predecessor of the modern machine gun. It was probably the most successful of the several rapid-fire guns that were developed at about this time. There was also changes in naval warfare during this war. During this war the naval started using the ironclad ship. The ships replaced the traditional wood ship the Union was using at this time. The first widespread use of aerial vehicles for military purposes occurred early in the Civil War. Hot air and hydrogen-filled balloons were used for aerial warfare. The use of balloons began in the North due to two men, Professor Thaddeus Sobieski Constantine Lowe and John LaMountain. Shortly after the Civil War began, Lowe and LaMountain separately approached the US Government communicating how valuable balloons could be in the role of aerial warfare. All the new technologies changed the way we did war forever. New weapons helped us win battles faster and defeat the enemy and little easier. It was just sad that we had to try all this new stuff out on our fellow Americans.
