Although a financial panic and sharp depression hit the nation in 1907, President Roosevelt remained popular. The Republican nomination was his for the asking, but having served almost two full terms, he chose not to run again. The Republicans then turned to William Howard Taft, who easily won the 1908 election. In some ways, Taft carried on Roosevelt's reform program. But as his term wore on, progressives became more and more unhappy with his actions.

1) He passed the Mann-Elkins Act which extended the regulatory powers of the ICC to telephone and telegraph companies. He also was somepart responsible fo rthe passing of the 16th amendment. This amendment stated that authorized a national tax based on individual income.
ReplyDelete2) Most of his progressive support was lost with the passing of a tariff bill. Both Taft and Progressives agreed with tariff reductions to lower prices of consumer goods. Some members of Congress favored higher tariffs to protect american industry. Taft went will the few Congress members over the Progressives.
3) Both TR and Taft were at totally different odds. TR decided to run for president again. Roosevelt won and affirmed another great presidential term.

He lost the progressives because he wasn't being conservative. Taft won and lots of popele were angry because they didn't want him to win because they thought that he wasn't the right man for the job.

The reforms that Taft carried out were Mann-Elkins Act, which extended the reulatory powers of the Interstate Commerce Commission to telephone and telegraph companies. With Taft's approval, Congress created the Department of Labor to enforce labor laws. It also passed mine-safety laws and established an eight hour workingday for employees of companies holding contracts with the federal government.
ReplyDeleteTaft lost the progressives' support because some of the members of Congress wanted to pass this thing where the tariffs would be really high so they could protect American Industry. Taft could have vetoed the bill or make them change it. Since he lacked the political skill to oppose it, he passed it and told everyone it was the greatest tariff ever passed. This made the progessives mad and they accused him of betraying the reform cause.
The results of the 1912 election was that Woodrow Wilson won. He won because he captured the nations reform mood. He had a program called the New Freedom that called for a revival of small business and a return to an America where the "little guy" was free from control of big business and government.
When Taft took office his main reforms delt with communication and tax. With communication he helped push the Mann-Elkins Act which gave more powers to the Interstate Commerce Commision for telephone and telegraph companies. He also pushed for a national tax based on income and a reduction of tariffs. He lost favor with the progressives becasue he made a very powerful enemy in Teddy Roosevelt. When he let conservatives push bills becasue he lacked the political skills to oppose them he made the progressives very angry. Woodrow Wilson won the 1912 election.
