Washington's Birthday is the official name designated to what many of us know as President's Day. During the month of February the birthday of two of our greatest President's takes place. Both George Washington who was born on Feb. 22nd and Abraham Lincoln born on Feb. 12th.

Much of the debate over the name of the holiday springs from the fact that state's can follow their own holidays how they see fit and many of them chose to also honor Lincoln, calling the celebration President's Day.
It was in 1968 that the term President's Day came up for legal consideration in the Congress but was shot down, though the holiday was moved to fall between the two President's birthdays. Again in the 1980's there was a resurgence of the term with advertisers which solidfied the holiday name in American culture.

Presidents Day is actually the official day of George Washingtons birthday. Abraham Lincolns birthday is Feburary 12 so the two were just merged together on the thirdy Monday of Febuary.
ReplyDeleteTeachers should use the days leading up to Presidents Day to educated students on the history of the American leaders. There should be special focus on Washington and Lincoln.
Many business and schools used to be closed on Presidents Day but as time as gone on this tradition has faded. Many say this is because man business take of Martin Lutheran King Day and another day off would be bad for them. I personally think it is somewhat disrespectful that we don't take this day of in school to at least honor our coutries leaders.
Presidents Day is as is obviously states a day we honor our presiidents on. Also called Washington's Birthday in some places because they hold the same date. Presidents day started in 1800 to honor all offices of the district of Columbia and then was expanded in 1885 to included all federal offices. Then in the 1980's there was a push to give the holiday the name presidents day to the holiday. The date was then put in place because it was so close to both Washington's birthday and Lincoln's birthday. That is how it has remained to present day.

Originally made in 1855by President Chester Authur was ment to be celebrated on Feburary 22 but may years later Congress moved all holidays were moved to Mondays so that workers could have three day weekends.

Today, it is well-known for being a day in which many stores, especially car dealers, hold sales. As with many US federal holidays, few Americans actually celebrate Presidents Day, and it is mainly a day off from work or school, although most non-government workers don’t get the day off. Overall, Presidents day is set aside to honor our past and presidents who have worked hard to make our country the way it is today.

A draft of the Uniform Holidays Bill of 1968 would have renamed the holiday to Presidents' Day to honor both Washington and Lincoln, but this proposal failed in committee and the bill as voted on and signed into law on June 28, 1968 kept the name Washington's Birthday. Over the years so it has also turned into a day to honor President Lincoln. Today this Holiday has become well-known for which many store hold sales, expecially car dealers. The USPS is always closed but other delivery places now offer services on this day. Some schools aslo take the Monday off. The holiday honors the accomplishments of the man who has been referred to as our “Founding Father”.

It had been called Washington's Birthday until about the mid 1980's when they decided that is should be called presidents day to celebrate all the presidents of the U.S.

They first assigned Presidents Day on Washington's birthday. But later it was changed. It is in the month of February.
ReplyDeleteSome schools get out for this occation but many do not. Some New York schools get out for a whole week. Unlike schools like Callaway which don't get out at all.
This day is a day that helps us to remember all the presidents and they many to come. Its a day to honor those who were leaders to this country and those who have done things for the best interest for the people of America.
