Although World War II was fought on the battlefields of Europe, Asia, and North Africa, American farms and factories also helped win the war. As the United States mobilized its resources for combat, the entertainment industry helped sustain morale. For Japanese Americans the war resulted in confinement in remote camps. For African Americans, Mexican Americans, and women, the conflict brought both new opportunities and reminders that discrimination and inequality still existed in American society. (p. 407, 16.2)

The United States mobilized for war by increasing production, expanding government control of the economy, and raising an army. Japanese Americans living on the West Coast were interned in relocation camps because of prejudice and war. The United States didn't want to take any chances with disloyalty after Pearl Harbor. African Americans and Mexican Americans won better factory jobs during the war but continued to fave widespread discrimination. Also they helped in the military effort.

ReplyDeleteThe Japanese Americans living on the west coast were interned into relocation camps because of prejudice and because of war hysteria. The japanese americans living in mostly Washington, Oregon, and California had long suffered racial discrimination, and many vocal politians persuaded the federal government to remove the people of japanese descent. They were ordered to detention camps in Wyoming, Utah, and other states.
Even though African and Mexican Americans still faced wide spread resentment, they had oppotunities during the war. They both served in the war. And Mexican Americans helped meet home front labor needs.This brought about better factory jobs for both. But both still faced a high level of disrimination.

3.) The gains that African Americans and Mexicans made were that some of their job restrictions were abolished and they were given more opportunities to work. Many became farmers or worked in factories.

Shipbuilders produced thousands of ships, creating a powerful navy and merchant marine. The Japanese Americans were interned during the war because of prejudice and war hysteria. They were interned in relocation camps. African Americans and Mexican Americans made some gains during the war. They won better factory jobs during the war but still continued to face widespread discrimination. They received these jobs because they weren’t as educated to get higher jobs, yet they were needed to do physical labor jobs to produce supplies for the war.

Posting my comment late. America mobilized for war by training large amounts of troops but primarily we chenaged our econemy to a war time econemy and made many factories built war time materials. Japanese Americans were put in internment camps because America was afriad they were spying for the Japanese.
