Your assignment this week will be based on 3.3.
During the mid 1800's an expansion west was taking place. This caused tension between those western and even southern sections of our country. In order to better understand these tensions, answer these three questions.
1.) Discuss the causes of the Mexican War.
2.) Also discuss the fighting that took place during the war.
3.) Talk briefly about the overall outcome of the war.

The causes that led to the Mexican War were when James Polk got elected to office he immediately called for the annexation of Texas. Polk also demanded that Mexico recognize the Rio Grande as Mexico's northern border.

The overall outcome of the war was that the U.S. won the war. We dictated the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in which Mexico gave up all claims to Texas and surrendered the territory known as the Mexican Cession.
With this treaty some 80,000 Spanish-speaking peole became U.S. citizens.

The Mexican War strarted in 1846 after receiving notice that Mexican trooops had crossed the Rio Grande and attacked a U.S patrol. Unknown to the Mexicans, Polk had this in his plans all along. Polk believed that the U.S was destined to control all western territories and make Texas a state.

The current president was an expansionist. The Mexican gov. wanted more people to live in their northern territory(now Texas). The combination of these with some American people living in the territory, resulted in high tension. This tension snapped when a band of Mexicans fired upon Americans, these lead to the Mexican War.
ReplyDeleteThe majority of the fighting was in Mexico's northern territory, with some U.S. forces seizing New Mexico and California. There were long marches to the Gulf of Mexico and Mexico City. On Sep. 14th Mexico City was captured by U.S. troops.
The result of the war was that the U.S. got Texas. Also, the U.S. bought other land from Mexican gov. for a total of $25 million.
