Theodore Roosevelts "square deal" promised to give every laborer and farmer a square deal, no more, no less. T.R.'s theory, with regard to helping the economy, dealt with protecting the consumer through reforms and trustbusting. After T.R.'s Presidency, Taft continued on with this theory of protecting the consumer through progressive reforms. Later on in the 1930's Franklin D. Roosevelt institutes an economic stimulus plan his administration calls the "New Deal". This plan calls for tax money to be spent on infrasturcture similar to that of President Obama's plan today.

**New Deal, FDR**
Your Assignment:
1.) Discuss the way President Obama and his plan has attempted to stimulate the economy. (Research the theory behind this plan)
2.) Discuss the other side of the aisle (Repbulicans) and their theory of the best way to stimulate the economy. (Again, research will be necessary)
3.) Which of these do you believe would better suit stimulating the economy.
Due: Sunday 2/1/10 by no later than 11:59p.m.
1.) 1.Immediate Action to Create Good Jobs in America
ReplyDelete2.Immediate Relief for Struggling Families
3.Direct, Immediate Assistance for Homeowners, Not a Bailout for Irresponsible Mortgage Lenders
4.A Rapid, Aggressive Response to Our Financial Crisis, Using All the Tools We Have.
2.) The Reblublicans say:
It's very hard to estimate
Just what it takes to stimulate
A corporation, but we know
These people need a lot of dough,
And so, if no one else objects,
We'll cut them some humongous checks.
But stimulating them is tough.
A billion may not be enough
To spur a corporation while
It keeps its CEO in style.
It's possible we should explore
Some way that we can give them more.
We may just give them all we've got:
It takes a lot to get them hot.
3.) I think the Republicans are better.
One year into office, and a week after pledging to do better at "speaking directly to the American people," Obama faces urgent challenges as he stands before lawmakers gathered in the Capitol and a prime-time television audience at home for the constitutionally mandated ritual of U.S. governing. The country has lost more than 7 million jobs since the recession began two years ago, unemployment is stuck at 10 percent, and the government is grappling with a record $1.4 trillion deficit.
ReplyDeleteThat leaves seven Republicans who haven't come out against the stimulus. Two of those seven, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine, have in fact spoken out in favor of the package. That could conceivably be ballgame for the Democrats, if all 58 of their members remain aligned. But, since the Democrats could potentially lose a couple of senators from their own ranks, they might require a Republican vote or two above and beyond the two women from Maine.
not obama he is spending our money
1.) Obama wants to spend more money to create jobs for the unemployed, the cost for this stimulus package is around $850 billion.
ReplyDelete2.) The republicans want to keep the money in the government and keep helping large companies with financial problems.
3.) I think that either of these solutions could create jobs and help with the unemployment rate.
Obama has ben trying to keep business that have many employed and can affect the economy in many ways running.
ReplyDeleterepublican want the rich to get more rich so they can make bigger business and creat more jobs
the republicans have a good plan
1. President Obama wants to spend tax dollars on programs and the try to make more jobs.
ReplyDelete2. The repbilicans want to make tax breaks for the rich to have them make more jobs.
3. I think republican idea is better because Obama raises taxes for everyone else.
1.)As said on www.ask.com Obama will get the economy back on track:
ReplyDeletePresident Obama signed legislation to jumpstart our economy, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, less than a month after his inauguration. The plan will save or create 3.5 million new jobs, make critical investments in our infrastructure and give 95 percent of working Americans a tax cut.
2.) Republicans on the other hand want to give tax breaks to the more rich. They feel that if the richer people have more money they will start more companies bringing more jobs to us. Yet they will not tax break the middle class.
3.) I am nuetral on my beliefs. I feel that Obama is right to give us tax breaks because alot of people are jobless which makes more middle class people get homeless. Although i believe that the republicans are right to. I like that the rich people might make it so we have more jobs so we can all live.
"Barack Obama’s economic plan will inject $75 billion of stimulus into the economy by getting money in the
ReplyDeleteform of tax cuts and direct spending directly to the people who need it most. Obama’s proposal will
immediately provide stimulus using means that do not require lengthy governmental or administrative delays.
The plan also reserves an additional $45 billion of stimulus that can be injected into the economy quickly in the
future if the economy continues to deteriorate.
For most Americans, this is a time of great economic anxiety. People are working harder for less and paying
more for everything from health care, to college tuition, to filling up the gas tank. Recent data reveals that the
unemployment rate has experienced its sharpest monthly increase since 2001 the last time the economy fell into
recession. Jobs have been lost in a wide range of industries, including construction, manufacturing, retail and
the financial services. Last month only 18,000 jobs were created – a tiny fraction of the 125,000 jobs the
economy needs to generate each month to keep pace with population growth.
Limited job growth has been coupled with inflation that is outpacing increases in average wages, meaning that
even those who keep their jobs have less buying power. Consumer confidence levels are the lowest they have
been since Hurricane Katrina and consumers are starting to cut back on spending as evidenced by lower-thanexpected
holiday sales with automobile purchases falling to their lowest level in a decade.
Strengthening our economy will be Barack Obama’s priority from day one as president. Months ago he outlined
a comprehensive package of economic reforms to help ease the burdens on middle-class and working families
while making progress on achieving long-run budget balance. But with the economy getting worse by the
month, Americans cannot afford to wait until the next president takes office to take action. Obama believes the
government should take steps to restore the confidence of consumers and businesses that we will not let things
get worse and encourage them not to cut back further on their spending and investment.
Experts agree that an effective stimulus package must provide immediate, temporary, direct economic relief
targeted to the people who need it and are most likely to use the funds and increase the level of economic
activity in their communities without permanently increasing the budget deficit. The goal should be to lessen
the pain that would occur from an economy-wide slowdown, not to use Americans’ economic hardship as a
rationale for enacting an ideologically driven policy agenda." Said by http://obama.3cdn.net/8335008b3be0e6391e_foi8mve29.pdf
Republicans believe that a stimulus plan is needed to put people back to work. But the Obama spending bill would stimulate the government, not the economy.
I personally we need to create jobs. For instance many jobs could be fulfilled if we built new homes, new roads, and schools. I also believe inflation needs to be slowed down.
Obama plans to jumpstart the ecomony by pouring money into the pockets of Americans. He will then fight for lower mortgage rates and prevent forecloseres. He will then push for jobs, and electric, and healthcare reform.
ReplyDeleteRepublicans want to reduce the taxes on poor people, give more money to the people, and stop borrowing money and increasing our national dabt.
I think both sides have good views, and a little of both would be the best solution. Pushing for job creation and and reform are good, but tax reform is also needed.
The $787 billion economic stimulus package was approved by Congress in February, 2009. The plan was to jumpstart economic growth, and save between 900,000 - 2.3 million jobs. The economic stimulus bill allocated funds as follows for$288 billion in tax cuts and$224 billion in extended unemployment benefits, education and health care.
ReplyDeleteThere was also $275 billion for job creation using federal contracts, grants and loans. This was found on About.com
The Republican's want to give tax relief to the hard working families. House Republicans propose to allow small business to take a tax deduction equal to 20% of their income. This will immediately free up funds for small businesses to retain and hire new employees. This was found on Republicanwhiphouse.com
I don't think that either one is going to be totally succesful. I think that it is going to be a combination of the two.
1) President Barack Obama, who won a large chunk of political capital in the 2008 election, is now looking to cash in as he urges Congress to pass a massive economic stimulus package.Obama painted an extremely grim portrait of the nation's economy on Saturday. Stated By CNN. Barack Obama’s economic plan will inject $75 billion of stimulus into the economy by getting money in the

2) House Republicans released their budget plan, entitled “The Republican Road To Recovery.” They claim the plan “curbs spending, creates jobs and lowers taxes, and controls the debt; and it will soon have our economy growing again.” Stated from Wonk Room.
3) I agree with the Republicans because my family has to pay taxes that means it will go up so we can pay for this plan.
1. According to obama.3cdn.net, Barack Obama’s economic plan will put $75 billion of stimulus into the economy by getting money in the form of tax cuts. It will also direct spending directly to the people who need it most. Obama’s proposal will immediately provide stimulus using means that do not require lengthy governmental or administrative delays. The plan also reserves an additional $45 billion of stimulus that can be injected into the economy quickly in the future if the economy continues to deteriorate.
ReplyDelete2. The republicans oppose Obama's stimulus plan. They say that it will benefit the government not the people. They think that in order to stmmulate the economy is to put people back to work.
3. I don't exactly know which side to take. at fist glance, I believed that we should not take our money out for the tax cuts because its our money, but after thinking about it further, my opinion changed. The republicans say that we need to put people back to work. But if they don't want to, you can't force them. If people are going to be lazy and drain the unemployment, then the government needs to take control. I back Obama, because he is at least trying to do something. After all, it's just money. You can always earn it back. We're thinking about the future and the world, not how much spending money we have today.
1) Get the economy back on track:
ReplyDeletePresident Obama signed legislation to jumpstart our economy, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, less than a month after his inauguration.Fight the housing and financial crises. A new housing program has stabilized the market, preventing more foreclosures and helping millions more re-finance at historically low mortgage rates. Rebuild our economy on a new, sustainable foundation. By making bold and wise investments in healthcare, energy and education, and restoring fiscal accountability to government spending, we will cut costs for American families and businesses.
2) They want tax reform, to tax the people who make more money. Although that isn't fair because many of the people who are rich worked hard to get there.
3) Well with the way Obama is taking charge...The Republicans. Even though its not fair, Obama isn't helping the way he said he would.
Obama spending bill would stimulate the government, not the economy.
ReplyDelete1)President Obama signed legislation to jumpstart our economy, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, less than a month after his inauguration. A new housing program has stabilized the market, preventing more foreclosures and helping millions more re-finance at historically low mortgage rates. The Administration is also moving forward with its plans to get credit flowing again to businesses and families, and to reform our regulatory system so we have a set of 21st century rules to match 21st century financial markets.By making bold and wise investments in healthcare, energy and education, and restoring fiscal accountability to government spending, we will cut costs for American families and businesses, create good jobs that can’t be shipped overseas, give our children the education they need to be competitive in the global marketplace and leave our grandchildren a legacy they can be proud to inherit. This is cited by barackobama.com.
ReplyDelete2)The Repbulicans however feel that there is a different way to handle the economy. As they feel they need to do "undo" the stimulis and cut tax for the rich. They claim the plan “curbs spending, creates jobs and lowers taxes, and controls the debt; and it will soon have our economy growing again.
3) I believe that the it is necessary to have a little both. With the democratic side, it does create more jobs. This leds to more money and taxing more people. However, the repbulician side ensures that you will always have tax money and it is a advantage to the poor people.
Pesident Obama's plan to help stimulate the economy is take taxpayers money to stimulate the economy. For example, he wants the money to be used to create jobs, fix the health care system, and other projects. He is mostly taxing the richer people, so thant is nice.
ReplyDeleteOne thing the Republicans want to do is since the small businesses make up around 90% of all businesses in America, they wnat do drop there taxes by 20%. For me, personally, that would be fine, but, I really don't count in the big picture. They also want more help for the unemployed.
I believe that a combination of the plans would be ideal, because "A house divided cannot stand." I my opinion, we need to work together to achieve our goals. For example I believee in the tax breaks to drop 20%, but I also don't want the rich to pay all our taxes. That would just cause civil unrest, which always leads to something bad. Also, that would encourage the people to stay in the middle class, and not try to improve their lives to their highest potential. This isn't the message we want America to send.
1.) Obama gave banks money and the auto industries money such as the "cash for clunkers" deal to get people to spend money for them to make money and create more jobs.
ReplyDelete2.) Republicans could stop handing out tax payers money because all they are doing with that is hurting themselves in the long run.3.) Republicans because they are more conservative.
1.) He wants to creat long lasting jobs. The cost of this stimulus plan is around $850 billion dollars.
ReplyDelete2.) The republicans want to help the big companies and keep as much money in the government as possible.
3.) I think they both can work out good. Helping the larger companies out keeps them going and lets them hire people on and keep them on cause they are able to pay them for there work then. Creating more jobs will get more people excited to work again.
he is trying to put money in to the economy and create jobs
ReplyDeleterepublicans want to keep the money in the government and keep helping large companies with financial
i think that both sides have good points.
President Obama wants to create long lasting jobs. The cost of this stimulus plan is around $850 billion dollars.
ReplyDeleteThe republicans want to keep the money in the government and keep helping large companies with financial problems.
I think the democratic idea is better.
1)president obama want to spend more money because he try to make more jobs.
ReplyDelete2)The Republicans want to keep money for rich people( like large company)
3)i think obama's better. because it take a lot of cost to change something. and obama's idea make not only rich people but also us change.
