During the 1912 campaign, Woodrow Wilson pledged to restore opportunity in American life. Once in office, Wilson moved to lower tariffs, reform banking, regulate corporations, and aid farmers and wage earners. As Wilson began his second term in office, progressives could claim some success in their efforts to improve American life. Yet much remained to be done. Progressives had barely begun to clean up government and regulate business, women still did not have the right to vote, and the pledge of equal opportunity for all Americans remained unfulfilled.

1.) Imagine you are a public relations adviser to President Wilson. Your task is to develop a media campaign to "sell" to the American public Wilson's reforms for tariff and banking.

Here in Washington we have been devising deals give farmers loans, government workers benefits, and women the right to vote. The way we are helping farmers is by offering them loans that aren't as costly, and are easier for them to pay off. We are also making it so that if a government worker gets hurt on the job he/she will recieve benefits such as pay during their recuperation. Finally we are about to pass the nineteenth amendment which will give women the right to vote.

ReplyDeleteAs the public relations person for Wilson, I am here to make you go with his goals. Reforming many thing would help us. By regulating corporations if would lower the amount of monopolies. Women should also be given the right to vote. They should have the same rights as men. All the talk about when they work they will loose their looks. They will loose no more looks by putting a ballot in the box.

ReplyDeleteWe need to help the lower income people who are still struggling to survive in this type of economy. We must protect them or no one else will.
ReplyDeleteThe first way we will do this is through helping out the farmers. We need to make banks have low interest loans to farmers. Farmers are the people who produce the food for this economy so therefore they are very important.
We also need to help our railroad workers. They are slaving away ten hours a day and they are getting low wages. My plan is to reduce the workday for them without cutting any of their wages. We don't want to have any strikes from railroad workers because is also a very important industry.
We also want to help the injured man who was injured while working on the job. I think that Wilson will be in favor of providing workman's compensation.
Our new plan for the day is to also reduce the tariff on imported goods. This will make consumer products cheaper to buy. This will help the little man.
We are also planning on building a three-level banking system with the Federal Reserve on top, 12 federal reaserve banks, and private banks at the third level.

ReplyDeleteWilson is going to deal with the economic turn down. Wilson wants to help with all of it. He wants to show that he cares about all of the citizens. We have some tariffs we could pass to help. The Underwood Tariff Act would reduce tariffs to their lowest levels in 50 years. To make up for the lost revenue, the bill imposed a graduated income tex, texing people with high incomes at a hight rate than those with low incomes. The Federal Reserve Act will give us a three-level banking system. At the top would be the Federal Reserve Board, second level would be the 12 Federal banks, The last would be the private banks. So with these acts Wilson will turn the economy around to the America he knows we can be!

ReplyDeleteThe Federal Reserve Act will combine two veiws. Banking reform was necessary, and many Democrats and progressive Republicans wanted the government to run the system. This act will create a three level banking system, starting with a federal reserve board. Under that, 12 federal reserve banks, and then private banks.
This is all needed in order to help the banks, and fix our economy.

ReplyDeleteI plan to pass Underwood Tariff Act. I need your support to reduce the tariff levels to there lowest in 50 years. You will pay less for goods we import, and will save a ton of money. The mojority of people will benefit from this bill, and it is the best for change for the middle class.
Next I encourage you to place your money back into the banks. I will be passing the Federal Reserve Act. It will create a three level banking system. This will give you the hometown feeling with the security of our national funds. The Federal Reserve board will oversee all the banks and set fair and just interest rest.
With your support I believe that we can achieve a better America.

Congress passed The Underwood Tariff Act in 1913. Its purpose was to reduce levies on manufactured and semi-manufactured goods and to eliminate duties on most raw materials. To compensate for the loss of revenue, the act also levied a graduated income tax (made legal by ratification of the Sixteenth Amendment earlier that year) on U.S. residents.

I plan to lower tariffs and will mount a publiic campaign to undermine the business lobby and overcome Senate opposition. We need a new strategy in order for this to work. The Underwood Tariff Act will acomplish this. This reduces tariffs to possibly their lowest levels in 50 years. ReplyDeleteBig business had blocked tariff reduction during Taft's presidency. we don't want them to control it. we need to reduce tariffs.
and, there is no central fund that banks can borrow from the prevent collapse during financial panics.Thus, when many people withdrew their deposits at the same time, banks commonly fail.we also need to change this, otherwise our economy is going to down.
I think that it is not right to take things away from women and only let men do them. They are people too and deserve to vote and pledge equal opportunity and such.
