In the late 1800's the United States emerged as the world's leading industrial producer and agricultural exporter. This economic success encouraged the nation to establish overseas colonies, just as the European powers were doing. The United States hoped colonization would provide new markets for its goods and new sources of raw materials. U.S. involvement in Samoa and a short war with Spain in 1898 increased the American role in the Pacific and the Caribbean. (Check out video below)

ReplyDeleteThere were many reasons that the United States had to become an imperialistic power.
Economic growth was one really big issue for many americans. Alfred Thayer Mahan wanted to become an imperialistic power because he wanted the United States to have more naval bases around the world. He said this would also provide ships a place to refuel and increase trade for the United States. This would also provide more economic oppurtunities for foreign markets.
Their were some people who wanted to be imperialistic because they wanted to spread Christianity. One such person was Josiah Strong. He believed that we had a duty that called us to spread our political system and religion to other parts of the world.
Some people wanted it because they wanted excitement. The Western United States was gradually becoming less of a frontier. Many wanted to keep up the American spirit by expansion overseas.

Imperialism is the quest for colonial empires. The United States had a desire for power and prestige, but it was also a matter of economics. Industrial workers prduced far more goods than could be consumed at home. So they turned to Africa, Asia, and Latin America for new consumers and new sources of raw materials. Overseas territories woulk make the US more powerful and provide sites for naval bases and steamship fueling stations from which to conduct trade.Some said that the US had a duty to to spread its poitical system and the Christian religion to other parts of the world. It was the desire for naval bases and fueling stations, rather than cultural concerns, that led the US, Great Britian, and Germany to square off in Saamoa. The United States won control over Eastern Samoa, and Germany was granted control over Western Samoa.

The economy was going down really bad so they needed to get more countries so they could get more reasources. The last was cultural motives. Josiah Strong and other English people wanted to spread their culture throughout the world because they thought they were better than everyone else.

Imperialism is the process of becoming a stronger country by starting global colonies and using their resources as goods to sell. This is what many countries in the 1800's attempted to do.
ReplyDeleteThe United States of America wanted to become an imperialistic power for many reasons. The strategic power of having military bases around the world makes any country a threat to others. Also the goods of that country could be transported and sold quickly. The U.S. also decided to turm to imperialism because the competing countries were attempting it, and the U.S. did not want to be out-done. Many people also wanted to spread our views of Christianity to the world, and different goods would influence culinary culture as well. Also to get other countries using our system of politics would help with trading and controling these acquisitions.

Imperialism is the settling or taking over of an area for the use of resources to gain power, both industrially and physically. The first and main reason the U.S. wanted to become an empire was to make trade easier.The ability to trade securely made it easier for the US to import goods. Ports in Alaska, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands are key fueling stations in trade with Russia, Asia, and the southern hemishpere. The next reason for imperialism was to get those goods. Alaska provided oil and timber. The last but possibly the most important today is security. With military bases on virtually every continent, in every hemisphere, an attack on any country would be available in a matter of hours.
