Although a financial panic and sharp depression hit the nation in 1907, President Roosevelt remained popular. The Republican nomination was his for the asking, but having served almost two full terms, he chose not to run again. The Republicans then turned to William Howard Taft, who easily won the 1908 election. In some ways, Taft carried on Roosevelt's reform program. But as his term wore on, progressives became more and more unhappy with his actions.

Taft also advanced the cause of conservation. He added vast areas to the nation's forest reserves. He also supported reforms to aid working people.

They won out when the House sent a low-tariff bill to the Senate. Taft could have vetoed the bill or he could have pressured Aldrich to change the rates. But Taft lacked the political skill to oppose conservative Republicans in congress.
3.) Wilson won the election receiving 435 electoral votes to 88 for Roosevelt and 8 for taft. Although Wilson won just six million popular votes, he took office with a strong mandate for reform.
Taft is responsible to the adoption of the 16th amendment. The amendment authorizes a national tax based on individual income.

Wilson won the election of 1912. This was because of his program, the New Freedom, that called for the revival of small business and a return to an America where the "little guy" was free from the control of big business and government.

Woodrow Wilson won easily because the Republican party was split into two because Roosevelt entered in late and then ran as a third party. Woodrow Wilson won the electoral vote in a landslide.

In 1912 a democrate from New Jersey won the presidential election. this was because the two candidates for the republican party had split the votes leaving it open for Woodrow Wilson to step in.
President Taft probably wasn't the best president we ever elected, in fact he was one of the worst. He was the president whose reform lead to our taxes being raised and other things like it. He also fired someone who was complaing about what was happening to the public lands.
ReplyDeleteTaft lost the progressives' support because he basically reversed all the progress they made. He raised the tariffs and called it the best bill ever passed by the republicans. This went against the progressives' movement to lower the tariffs and it went against the popular vote of the people.
The result of the election was a split of the republican votes, some for Taft and some for Roosevelt. This lead to Wilson's election. Why anyone would vote for Taft is beyond me.
