Wilson's Campaign (Blog #15)

During the 1912 campaign, Woodrow Wilson pledged to restore opportunity in American life. Once in office, Wilson moved to lower tariffs, reform banking, regulate corporations, and aid farmers and wage earners. As Wilson began his second term in office, progressives could claim some success in their efforts to improve American life. Yet much remained to be done. Progressives had barely begun to clean up government and regulate business, women still did not have the right to vote, and the pledge of equal opportunity for all Americans remained unfulfilled.

Your Assignment:

1.) Imagine you are a public relations adviser to President Wilson. Your task is to develop a media campaign to "sell" to the American public Wilson's reforms for tariff and banking.

Due: Sunday by 11:59p.m.

  1. Wilson's reforms are made to help you. You are the people and he is working to protect you. I guarantee these reforms will benefit you. Wilson's banking systems are to keep banking alive for your benefit as well. His three level banking system is going to make things a lot better for the people.

  3. President Wilson has made this country great. He passed the Underwood Tariff Act that reduced tariffs levels. He backed the creation of the FTC which was authorized to investigate corporations and issue cease and desist orders. He is the right choice.

  4. 1)High taxes, what a waste of money, with a low tariff, youy wont have to spend as much on the things you need. What about the banks, they have to much control, they set interest rates so high you cant pay them off, the federal reserve act will change this, the government will control a low interest rate.

  7. 1) The Underwood Tariff act is the a great idea. If there are lower tariffs, the more money the American people have to purchase goods they need/want, thus putting that money back into the economy to keep it flowing. This will also help the buisnesses. And the three-level-banking system is a wonderful idea too. WIth both private and government banks running the banking system we can get the best from both sides. The private won't be able to raise their interests rates sky-high for the public control will keep it at a decent rate and vice versus.

  11. I am Woodrow Wilson and i approve this message. You ask what it is that I can do for you. Well I'm the President of the United States sooo quite a bit actually. I can probably do more for you than anyone else. The real question is what will i do for you? That's a really great question. The truth is i really don't know. I have these women asking for rights to vote and other bestowments such as said. I have big businesses complaining that government is against them. I have small businesses complaining about big businesses being to big and being bullies. So what's a guy to do? Hmmmm, I'm going to lower tariffs but also introduce a graduated income tax to compensate for that. And for banking i shall put a three level banking system to ensure the most efficiency. There. Your welcome.

  12. We will make a better banking system and reduce tariffs. By creating the Underwood Tariff Act we will reduce tariffs to their lowest in 50 years. By Creating the Federal Reserve Act we will create a three level banking system. At the top will be the Federal Reserve Board, a group appointed by me and charged with running the system. At the second level will be 12 Federal Reserve Banks, under mixed public and private control. At the third level will be private banks, which can barrow from the Federal Reserve Banks at interest rates set by the Board.

  13. 1.) Wilson passed the Underwood Tariff Act which reduced tariffs their lowest levels in fifty years. He also backed the passing of the Federal Reserve Act combined two different views to create a three-level banking system. Wilson also backed the passing of the clayton Antitrust Act which helped to clarify and extend the 1890 Sherman Antitrust Act. The Wilson administration also backed the creation of the FTC which was authorized to investigate corporations and regulate business. He helped out the farmers by supporting the Fedral Farm Loan Act which provided low interest loans to farmers. Wilson also supported the Adamson Act which reduced the workday for railroad workers with no cut in pay. He also supported the Federal Workmen's Compensation Act which provided benefits to federal workers injured on the job. Congress passed the Keating-Owen Child Labor Act which outlawed the interstate sale of products produced by children. The Nineteenth Amendment had Wilson's support granted women full voting rights.
