President Wilson developed a program for a just peace even before the war ended. This program served as the focus of the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. Wilson had to compromise on many of the points, but the final treaty included the heart of his peace program-the League of Nations. The U.S. Senate, however, rejected the treaty. Without American membership, the League of Nations proved inadequate to solve the world's postwar problems.

1) Do some research in your book and on the internet to find out what the global impact of the war was. (*Hint: What are things that may exist today because of WWI. Also, are there events that took place after WWI that were directly related to WWI?)

Though the United States was in combat for only a matter of months, the reorganization of society had a great effect on American life. During the war, daily life was affected as men were drafted and sent abroad, and women had to fill their places in the factories. Youth programs grew and developed in a response to aid the government with these new programs. During and after World War I, life for children in the United States was greatly affected in a variety of ways.
ReplyDeleteThe war cost millions of lives and billions of dollars. It reinforced the American strain of isolationism which contributed to the Great Depression. War reparations and the harsh peace settlement on Germany made conditions ripe to bring Hitler and the Nazis to power, and the war was the straw that broke the back of the Russian monarchy which allowed the Russian Communists to take power.

The USA felt bitter over the ending of WW1, many felt that the USA was not being given the recognition it deserved and felt mistreated by Britain and France. Britain in an attempt to help it's maritime fleet which had suffered during WW1 took a number of protectionist measures. This angered US shipping and trading houses and the USA followed suit. Sooner Europe and the USA were in a trade war and both side had taken a number of protectionist measures to protect there markets which had a negative effect upon trade. This slowed the market. Wall Street being the market for the free world was effected because USA-European trade was effected. Suddenly a cash shortfall was noticed much of it from the national banks. Not enough stocks were backed by solid assets. The national banks panicked and the entire market followed suit. The great depression began.
ReplyDeleteSo in return the U.S. put up high tariffs so Americans would buy American. But there was a problem, The Americans were the source of income to a lot of Europeans and the products they produce.
So Germany again went broke, and couldn't pay. France and Britain just walked in there and took stuff, and Germany was now super broke and angry... that anger manfiested to Hitler you can agrue. France and Britain was just broke, and the U.S. was real depress. And Russia was still in there run to catch up.
WWI was directly responsible for the destruction of the german and austrian empires.it was also indirectly responsible for the collapse of tsarist russia and ottaman turkey.the fall of the russian empire is perhaps the most significant event which lead to the rise of communism and in turn the cold war.

The Great Depression, the Cold War, and the collapse of European colonialism can also be traced, at least indirectly, to the First World War. World War I killed more people--more than 9 million soldiers, sailors, and flyers and another 5 million civilians--involved more countries--28--and cost more money--$186 billion in direct costs and another $151 billion in indirect costs--than any previous war in history. It was the first war to use airplanes, tanks, long range artillery, submarines, and poison gas. It left at least 7 million men permanently disabled.

Those businesses still operating could not produce enough to meet demand, and rampant inflation resulted. In the middle East Arab nations, which had sided with the Allies in hopes of winning their independence found themselves living under French and British mandates.

Germany and Russia suffered the greatest losses. Also influenza epidemic of 1918 to 1919 killed some 27 million worldwide. The war had left the industry and agriculture of much of continental Europe in ruins. So Europe got the worst of the war.

ReplyDeleteWomen were urged to give up their jobs to make room for returning veterans. Farmers also began to majorly struggle as prices fell and markets dried up. There were also a huge amount of strikes and the Palmer raids. Chemical warfare during WWI led to the ideas of the newer technology that we have today. Also, the League of Nations led to today's United Nations.

The impact in Germany after World War 1 was really big. The reparation costs led Germany in depression and poverty. The reparation costs were so high that Germany had no money, that's why the German government decided to print more money. This decision had inflation as a consequence. The German government didn't thought that inflation doesn't change anything, poverty still stays the same. The inflation during the post war time in Germany was so bad, that you had to pay for a piece of bread 1 million deutsche Mark. People heated their home with their money because it wasn't worth anything anymore. WW1 were directly related to WW2 because Germany's infrastructure was still destroyed when Hitler took over, that was one of the main reasons why he could take over Germany easily. Furthermore he blamed the Jews for losing WW1.

This debt gave Germany resentment to the outcome of the war, leading to tensions that caused WWII. The League of Nations was the organization that inspired the United Nations, the global peace organization that exists today. After WWI, Russia became the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. New countries such as Austria, Hungary, and Turkey were formed. Wilson's attempts of convincing the United States to accept the Treaty of Versailles led to a Republican landslide victory in the presidential elections of 1920.

It was the rise of dogfights, which is air to air combat with fighter planes, as well as first war that used bombers. Tanks came into use as well. The way people fought wars changed. Troops were more mobile and less defensive tactics. Many empires fell after the war and ne.w countries were formed. The war gave rise to communism and Nazism
ReplyDeleteWorld War 1 had a huge impact on our United States today. The Treaty of Versailles caused a lot of things to go downhill. It made Germany very angry, and it invented the mandate system. The mandate system is when you have to report conditions to the League of Nations. There were also many things invented due to world war one such as poison gas and tanks. This has helped us to this day. WW1 risked many lives, and a lot of money.

Four empires collapsed due to the war, old countries were abolished, new ones were formed, boundaries were redrawn, and international organizations were established. There was the Treaty of Versailles that made the Mandate System, and also new military items such as tanks, machine guns, and poison gas were brought in.
